Estancia "La Maipu"

EL CHALTEN-ESTANCIA LA MAIPÚ TRAVERSE (4 días)
( Lago Viedma - Lago San Martín )

Day 1: we leave in vehicle from Chaltén to the Cristina ranch, 20 km from town. We start from here the ascent through the Barrancas valley, a very interesting place due to its geological characteristics. This is a good spot to see Condors, because there are sheep that attract them when they look for food. We keep going up till there source, to an altitude of 1000m. We go to the gate and start descending to the Portones Valley, following guanacos trails, the place chosen for our first camp.
Lunch during the trekking. Walking time: 6/7 hours.
Night and dinner in camp.

Day 2: Breakfast. Today we'll ascend the Portones River through a wide valley with a big number of hidden marine fossils. The isolation and the small number of people that transit this area make this valley the perfect place to see wild life. Later on, arriving to the Portones Pass we'll have a wonderful surprise: in front of us the San Martín lake with its peninsulas and arms, The Maipú Ranch, the Astillado mountain, and an infininite number of mountains on the Argentinean an Chilean sides. Our descent will take us to the beginning of the Elena's River and to arrive to camp we'll follow the forest direction.
Lunch during the trekking. Walking time: 6/7 hours.
Night and dinner in camp.

Day 3: Breakfast. We begin the descent through a leafy forests to "La Maipú" Ranch hut. This is an easier day; we'll cross green fields and meadows with beautiful views near the main house. Early in the afternoon we'll arrive to the hut, and after a short rest we'll be ready to visit the "Livelly Museum", first settler of this land.
Lunch during the trekking. Walking time: 4 hours.
Night and dinner at the hut.

Day 4: Breakfast. Today we'll have the option to enjoy a horse ride in the area. We'll visit the shear shed to understand how patagonian ranches work. Depending the time of the year we'll be able to see a shearer in action.
In the afternoon we'll leave to Chaltén finishing our traverse to this corner of paradise in Patagonia.
Lunch during the horse ride or trekking.
