Tupungato Volcano mountaineering - 14 days

Tupungato is the highest mountain south of the Aconcagua River, and is considered the highest active volcano in the world, having erupted as recently as 1986. It is a huge isolated volcano, dominating the southern landscape as seen from Aconcagua (22,831 ft.), which rises just sixty miles north.It is on the border of Chile and Argentina. At an elevation of 6570 m / 21.555 Ft it is one of the 12 andean giants above 6500m.

It stands within approachable distance from a major international highway, and is roughly fifty miles east of Santiago. Several small towns and villages are found throughout the area. Tupungato is traditionally approached from either the north, west, or south, all routes being comparable in terms of length and difficulty.


Day 1. Arrival to Santiago de Chile. Hotel accommodation.
Day 2. Transfer Santiago- Río Chacayes, in the Alfalfal Valley. We use mules to hike up to our first camp, Baños Azules at 2420m /7980 ft. (4.30h)
Day 3. Baños Azules Camp to Vegas del Flojo Camp. (9h) .We stop for a while in the Tupungato hot springs.
Day 4. Trekking to Los Españoles Camp at 4350m / 14350 ft. (5.30 h)
Day 5. We move to El Hito Camp. It is a short journey to make a rest.(2h)
Day 6. Hiking up to "La Piedra del Guanaco Camp" at 5480m /18080 ft.
Day 7. Trekking from "Piedra del Guanaco" Camp to Argentinos Camp, the High Camp, at 5910m / 19500 ft. (5.30h)
Day 8. Summit day attempt . Way back to Los Argentinos Camp.(10 to 13h)
Day 9. Extra day for the case we need it.
Day 10. Los Argentinos to Los Españoles Camp.( 4 to 5h)
Day 11. Trekking back to Vega de los Flojos Camp. Short day.
Day 12. Hiking down to Baños Azules, Camp 1. (7h)
Day 13. Short hiking to Rio Chacayes. Transfer to Santiago. Hotel accommodation.
Day 14. Flight back at home
